We (me + bf) are arriving in Shanghai tomorrow night for a whirlwind two week visit to China. We have already confirmed 4 nights accom in Shanghai, and I estimate we will want to spend approx 4 nights in Beijing at the end of our trip before we fly out of Beijing on the 18th April. We definitely want to visit Xi'an for the Terracotta Warriors in between, and after reading all your wonderful posts on TT, now I am wondering if it would be feasible to make a journey to Yangshou also. I am thinking fly out of Shanghai to Guilin, stay 2 nights, fly to Xi'an, stay two nights then on to Beijing. Have been looking at flights on elong.
Any recommendations on cool (central location, budget) places to stay in Yangshou and Xi'an?
How does the intinerary sound?
Many thanks

Yeah, do it. Stay in Yang shuo rather than Guilin. You can see a few things in Guilin either before or after having spent you time in Yangshuo. Have a great trip.

Yup, that sounds like the way to do it.
Good places to stay in Yangshuo
In Xi'an, are you looking for dorm beds, or private room? How many of you are there, 2?
Cheers!

Possible. If you are strapped for time, you can possibly reduce the time in Shanghai (that is if you can cancel the prebooked accommodation without penalty).
Also agree about Yangshuo

Thanks for the feedback you helpful people! Ellyse, we would prefer a private room for 2 with dbl bed in Xi'an. The link to Yangshuo accom is great :-)

there are a lot of things to see in xi'an,read more before you come that will increase the fun.

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I felt so overrun with tourism bureaus and people trying to hassle me constantly in Yangshuo that my stay there was pretty unenjoyable. My girlfriend and I literally could not get through an entire meal without several people attempting to sell us postcards and fruit or something, and virtually every other person we ran into was from either Europe or North America.
Our only escape from the maddening vendors was riding bikes into the countryside, which was quite nice. And our hotel room was absolutely gigantic, for like $30/night, with windows on all sides opening up right onto the river. I will reply again with the name of it if I can find it.
Nonetheless, we found Guilin a huge relief after all of this.

G'day,
I lived in Yangshuo for a year and thoroughly loved it.

As #7 found out, if you stay on West Street (Xi Jie) then the touts can become pests, but there is much more to Yangshuo than Xi Jie.
Guilin has nothing going for it except the Brazilian BBQ, and that it is a hub to get to the good spots. From Guilin you can get a bus to Long Ji rice terraces, Long Sheng, The Hotsprings, and the Xing An Amusement park and golf course.
