I'm traveling to Beijing tonight (Sunday, March 4) and am planning to spend a week in/around the city. I'm looking for any advice on things to see and do outside of the city's most famous sights (which i've heard can be seen in 3/4 days) --- I'm not averse to day-trips, or other slightly more costly adventures (organized tours, etc), so any suggestions are welcome. I'd like to be able to stay in a single hostel for the duration and use it as a home base, but if there are any particularly fantastic overnight trips you can recommend, please do. There are alot of things to see in Beijing. Just to add on the list, i suppose you should make a trip to Wang Fu Jing (pretty touristy though) and Marco Polo Bridge. Do check out my beijing blog.

If you are here for a Sunday morning the Panjiayuan antique market is also excellent and relatively non-touristy. Beihai park is an excellent place to visit as well- I think overall parks are the feature of Beijing, though they won't be looking their best now. Maybe the snow we're getting tonight will help, if it doesn't melt.
The City Wall ruins are also kindof interesting, and don't forget Hutongs. I also liked Prince Gong's mansion.
If the weather still isn't good when you get here the Military Museum is pretty interesting.
