Hi everyone,

I'm planning to visit Sichuan soon and was excited to read that there are Tibetan communities near the border with Tibet. I would really like to visit them. However, the lonely planet China says that access to them by foreigners can be denied at any time. I have a short amount of time and cannot go all the way to the west only to be denied access. Are there Tibetan towns that are rarely closed to outsiders? Is there a site that can tell me what is closed or not? Is there any tours that visit Western Sichuan?

Thanks in advance

The best web site for info is "The Land of Snows" run by an amazing guy who used to be a regular poster here. Be wary of agents posting who have their own agendas.

Most of Western Sichuan is open, relatively few places are closed to foreigners. Ngawa (Aba town) is....but the rest of Aba Prefecture is open. Yarchen Gar and Sertar/Larung Gar as mentioned above are currently closed. But plenty of routes and towns that don't go through those areas. #1 has a good basic route to start with.
