I will be arriving to china on a 30 day tourist visa. Is it difficult to get a chinese visa extension for another 30 days?

Do not extend your visa until close to the time that it runs out. Getting an extension adds 30 days to whenever you apply. So if you enter on the 15th, apply on or about the 10th of the next month but check about holidays and weekends and consider where you will be.

I am not sure that it always takes a week. Seems to me that it depends upon the town, the PSB office and perhaps how much you pay.
