This is an interesting article about the tiger

Has anyone any further information , particulary as to when construction will start, when the gorge maybe closed to visitors etc , or is this a fanciful article with no substance to the story

Certainly will be a sad day for all concerned.

Where would the photo with the mountain backdrop been taken

Cheers

Thx for the link - good article.

Is it possible to visit and appreciate the gorge without actually doing the trek? or doing a partial trek?

and here's the real dumb question - are there rafts one can take down the river?

thx

I don't think you'd want to take a raft -- it's a very violent river there. I watched floating tree trunks being sucked underwater and then thrown back into the air.

Fingers crossed the dam scheme will not happen. TLG should be regarded as a national treasure.

Chiefie - Yes, it's possible to visit the gorge in a day trip without doing the treck. We ended up with only one day to see the gorge, and while we didn't exactly go where we expected to, we had a lovely day in the "national park area" of the gorge.
We went to the Lijiang long-distance bus station and haggled a full-day ride to the gorge and back with one of the drivers (very pushy, but we found a friendly guy and his wife). It took 2 hours to get there, and we noticed he didn't drop us off in Qiaotou, we were on the wrong side of the river (the south side). He took us to the "park entrance" and we paid for the tickets (50 RMB) and then he dropped us off at a trail entrance. The trail was paved and carved into the side of the gorge. It was about a 2 mile walk to the end - you walk all the way out to the tiger statue on the middle rapids and have a good view up and down the gorge. The best views we had were actually on the way out of the park as more and more mountains became visible - our driver kindly stopped many times for us to take photos. As we reflected on our day, even though it wasn't what we were expecting, we were able to drive through gorgeous scenery, the walk was well-defined (and totally unaddressed in the LP section on the gorge), and we had a wonderful day.
Hope this helps!
Jen

BTW - the picture of the mountains with the bridge and the lake in front was taken in Lijiang (Black Dragon pool), not in Tiger Leaping Gorge. I do recommend taking a day or two to explore these mountains, and go up into the meadows that they recommend in the guidebook. NOT disappointing!!

Yes, it's possible to do it in a day without hiking.
Cheers!
