ok so i just got approached by 2 lovely looking girls in people square.

They started talking to me, of course being in China you get this a lot so i just had a chat with them, they said they were going to a tea ceremony and asked if i wanted to come along.

So off we went into a shop that looked like a massage shop, i started to think something was up.

The girls were really really nice and spoke good english so i wasnt complaining.

Basically we sat down in a room and this women came in and showed us a tea ceremony where we would taste different types of tea. you only have a tiny glass of each tea, i saw prices on the jars, they ranged from 50 yuan per 50g all the way up to 120 yuan per 50g

I didnt really care much i was going to pay that much anyway so i just went along with it and it lasted about 1 hour.

Was a really good time, the teas were lovely and the two girls either side of me was even better.

Then the bill come...........

1560 yuan.

Then i got offered if i wanted to buy any tea, ber in mind they were mostly 80 yuan each. This boosted the bill up to 1800 yuan

I knew something like this was going to happen but felt pretty confident in the fact that they had invited me and i didnt even have a wallet on me (just a security pouch round my waist) so i knew i was in control of the situation.

at this point i just laughed and said 'im not paying that, i simply dont have the money'

the girls now changed a bit and started asking if we could split the price or if i had a credit card to pay for the bill, i was just laughing and saying no. They kept being a bit more persistent and asking me if i had uk pounds or us dollars

In the end the 2 girls didnt buy any tea, at first they were going to buy some when i was asking how much is it (probably to make me pay for it).

So ye £150 to taste 6 little cups of tea screams a scam to me.

Dont take any cr*p off them, they may be pretty but just be stern and they soon shut up.

I paid 50 yuan towards the 1500 cost, i thought an hour with 2 pretty girls and tasting some genuinely tasty tea was probably worth 50yuan

so has anyone had this happen to them as well???

is it a scam or am i just a tight a$$

Sounds like you scammed them!

And yes it is a well known scam - most people pay either because there are a couple of heavies near the door, or they just feel like they should pay.

A scam? Seriously?

Yes, it is a common scam. I have seen it tried in Beijing and Shanghai.
The opening line is often:
Hi, I am an English student/teacher, I would like to practise my English, I know a nice coffee/teashop...

How was the tea?

lol damn im usually quite good with noticing these things, though tbh i did have a slight inclining it was scam, i guess i was more enthusiastic because i knew i didnt have any/much money on me lol, though i did have my £1200 camera with me :/

the tea was actually really really nice. The ginseng was my favourite

lol i bet they thought what a waste of a few hours once they found out i was only going to pay 50 yuan

ah it was a fun experience looking back, im glad i went along with it, you live and learn i guess.

Extremely common. You're actually lucky as i've heard of this situation getting out of control, even physical. The girls get a cut of the take. They essentially work for the teahouse.

If you had been approached by two hideous, hunchbacked guys instead, would you have gotten clued into the scam any earlier?

6 - haha if 2 guys come up to me i would of told them to run a mile, 2 lovely girls on the other hand i was happy to go along

7 - ye im not sure why they let me pay so little, im a very big guy so maybe they just didnt want to cause a scene or let anything get out of hand, it was really strange as well because the 2 girls walked around with me for another 15-20 mins once we were outside and even escorted me to the shanghai museum so for the money i paid i think i got a bargin lol

8 - you mean while in shanghai you never got approached by anyone????
it ruins the experience at night time having so many people coming up to you asking if you want things
