Hello everyone !

I'm going for a long trip in SE Asia in a few weeks, and I will start by a few days in Shanghai. Then, I will fly to Chiang Mai, in Thailand.
I heard about the 144h allowed without visa in shanghai if you are in transit ; however, some sites say you need a visa for the country you go to next, some say "only if needed". In Thailand, for a french citizen (which I am), you get a visa exemption if you stay less than a month (which I'm planning to do), so I didn't get a Thai visa. Will I be able to get the 144h in Shanghai or will I be forced to get a visa, either for Thailand or for China ?

Don't know if I made myself clear, but in short, the question is : can I get the exemption of visa even if I don't have the visa for Thailand, since I don't need a visa for Thailand ? Thanks a lot ;)

You need to be allowed in the next country and if that means a visa then you need a visa. If you are visa exempt for Thailand then no problem.

You shouldn't have a problem, if everything else is in order.

Nonetheless, I'd encourage you to get a visa so you can see more of China at your leisure and not have to fret over the details of TWOV.

Great thanks a lot !
And yeah, I thought about taking a visa for China and staying there a bit, but I don't have lots of time so I focused on SE Asia :)

You don't have to show a visa, but you do have to show an itinerary or e-ticket, showing a confirmed booking on the flight from Shanghai to Thailand, within 144 hours.
