Hi All, Myself and my partner are heading from our home in New Zealand to Shanghai for a whirlwind 4 day holiday.
We touch down on Friday 27th April and leave on Tuesday 1st May.
Neither of us have ever been to China before and are looking for suggestions of things to see/do during our stay.
Obviously we would like to take in the 'must see' tourist sights but has anyone got any of there own ideas?
My Girlfriend is most keen to shop and do the markets so any suggestions of 'must shop' destinations would be greatly appreciated. We are stayin on Nanjing Rd so I here thats a good start for shopping.
I am told the Hangzhou night markets are a must do.....Any comments? Is it worth the trip out of Shanghai?
Any day tours in or out of Shanghai that could be recomended?
Outstanding places to eat?
Finally is there anybody/s who would be in Shanghai during our stay and who would like to join our little journeys for a day or so?
All information is greatly appreciated and we cannot wait to be there.
Personal Messages welcome for constructive comment and conversation.

Actually I would say there isn't really much in the way of 'must see' tourist sites in Shanghai.
These are things though that I would include.
1. Yu Yuan gardens. Take a wander around the area as well. I really like just wandering in the area between the gardens and the fabric market. Just walk.
2. Stroll along the Bund.
3. I would say take a day trip out to one of the water villages.
4. I don't think Hangzhou is worth the trip on your short visit but I've never been to the night markets there so maybe someone else will correct me.
5. You could also do a day trip to Suzhou if you wanted but I would probably just go see the actual Yu Yuan garden (see number 1) unless you are really interested in Chinese gardens.
If you like museums the one in Shanghai is good.

What time are you arriving on 27/4 and leaving on 1/5? I'll volunteer to "spout" an itinerary for you if you could answer that question.
Cheers!

Hi ellyse,
We arrive on 27/4 at 07:45 am and leave on 01/5 at 2:15 pm.
Your help and ideas will be most appreciated.
Thank You in advance from both of us.

Nanjing Road is okay for shopping, but I like the side roads that lead off Huai Hai Road (places like Maoming, Shanxi) and all along Changle Road from Changshu Road to the N-S expressway.
I think a good place to do some looking around would be websites like smartshanghai.com - or picking up a copy of SH Weekend or That's Shanghai while you're here.

nightlife at Tongren Lu is fairly sleazy (below Nanjing Road). I might also add a side trip to at least walk through Xintiandi - even if it's too expensive even for those of us earning foreign salaries. I am not sure about venturing over to Pudong twice in the span of 4 days. I've been here 2 months, and have only been over there twice.
