In September, I will be in Beijing for three days. I've seen most of the common sights in Beijing. Can someone recommend a good day trip outside of Beijing or an overnight stay. I've been to the Great Wall so please suggest something different. Anything scenic or cultural would be great. Thanks for your help.

I enjoyed going out to see the Marco Polo bridge. I walked from the nearest metro stop and saw people driving horses and carts on the expressway and walked through a little village, where I had lunch, to get to the bridge. As is so often the case, getting there was at least as interesting as the site itself. Going out to the Old Summer palace (just the garden really) or the Botanic gardens or Fragrant Hills park is a pretty easy trip,to do as well.

The marco polo bridge and the nearby fortress and japanese war museum are an alright half day. They are well within Beijing though, not really a out of town day trip.
Tianjin can be good for a day. Another big city with a fair amount to see that is often overlooked. With the fast train it takes no time to get to and from.
Chengde CAN be done as a day, but an overnight is far better.
The Eastern Qing Tombs somehow got almost all the important Qing Emperors.
Shijiazhuang isnt all that great, apart from the provincial museum, but Zhengding is pretty nice and the best way to access it is through Shijiazhuang. The fast train makes it a very easy day trip.

I wouldn't waste my time on Tianjin.
I haven't been there yet, but Cuandixia is always on my to-do list. Like the Eastern tombs.

You can visit the Ming 13 Tombs if you have not visited. Visit Ding Ling, which is the only tomb (out of the 13) that has been fully excavated and visitors could enter the underground palace. Over there, there are exhibitions about the history of the tomb, the excavation and the relics unearthed from the tomb.
I have visited Tianjin on a day trip as well, but personally, I feel there's nothing special there.
