I would like to spend 4-5 days walking through rural areas in North-East China. I'm looking for a region with a number of small villages clustered fairly close together that would be connected by a foot trail or cart paths (so I'm not walking along a busy highway). I would be looking to stay in guesthouses each night. There doesn't need to be any particular sights or places of historical significance along the way, but some pleasant scenery would be nice. I'm starting from Dalian, but anywhere within a 1 day radius works.

I appreciate that this is a very vague request, but any suggestions?

Cart paths?? What century do you think you're in? I think you have unrealistic expectations for what walking in the countryside of China will be like in 2018. Locals generally get around in motorized vehicles of some sort or another, and finding long distance roads that aren't heavy with traffic is likely to be difficult. Unless you're in sparsely populated areas, but then you aren't going to find the string of villages you're hoping for.

I really enjoyed Ji'an, for day-hikes and nice countryside, but have no idea what possibilities for long-distance hiking there would be like. Also some interesting areas along the border with Mongolia.

Don't expect guesthouses in random villages with nothing of notable significance in them...

Thanks for your response. I appreciate that an area like this might be hard to find in NE China, which is why I'm enquiring.

I've traveled like this plenty of times in Western China and didn't have a hard time finding simple 旅馆 in most places where I could stay the night. It was no problem walking for days through the countryside.

By cart paths, I'm suggesting the narrow roads often found in rural areas for motorcycles and small tractors. They look like the cart paths on a golf course.

Where in Western China have you done multi-day hiking like that?

A few times in the Sichuan basin, to the north or east of Chengdu. The population is fairly dense, but largely rural, so there's lots of small settlements linked by very minor roads and paths with little traffic. Just take a bus out to a small town, pick a direction and start walking. Did a similar multi-day walk in Guizhou, not that far from Guiyang (but I don't remember the exact area now).
