ps about trains
we found (in August mind you) that overnight trains were very, very difficult to book due to massive demand. we only manged a couple and due to time constraints took several flights, eg £35 Beijing to Xi'an , cheap by UK standards but trains much cheaper. Large train stations absolutely stuffed with millions of chinese trying to buy tickets, read guide book carefully for advice on how to deal with that. Also, with no language buses are hard, but not impossible. I did it and I'd never been anyweher in asia beofre and i'm not an adventrous person!
