My husband and I are flying into Tokyo and are planning on spending a week or so in Japan before moving on to China. When we originally looked at tickets from Tokyo-Beijing for late August/early September they were about $250 but have since gone up to ~$500 each. We really don’t want to spend that much so we’re looking for another way to get from Japan to China.

We found The China Express Line http://www.celkobe.co.jp which runs from Kobe to Tianjin at a reasonable rate and takes about two days. Does anyone have any experience with this ferry or do you have any other advice on how we can get from Japan to China for under $300 each?

I took the China Express ferry & found it was fine although we ran into a big typhoon!

The dormitories were large rooms with futons side by side and our luggage was stored in the middle gangway of all the futons which I have to admit was a bit disconcerting if we had to evacuate but there are cabins you could book.

The scenery in the Inland Sea was stunning; worth doing the trip just to see that!

Thanks Kira!

Did you book your ticket in advance or a few days before?

Also, what time of year did you travel? Since we're planning on late August, I'm afraid that the tickets might be harder to come by.
