Thanks 889. We are considering the itinerary you suggested. Huashan doesn't interest me as I'm afraid of heights. I looked at trains based on your itinerary and there was some backwards and forwards. As we are not interested in returning to Beijing, not sure how to proceed from Wutai Shan. Any ideas?

Hi jiejie
We decided against Yunnan and Sichuan. Mainly due to the weather but also as a photographer I will be missing the ricefields and the rapeseed seasons - when the region is really spectacular.

We are going to do the more traditional Xi'an-Pingyao-Wutai Shan circuit. Not sure what to see after WS. And also wondering if we go by train directly to Wutai Shan and do the trip in reverse order. What do you think? This is just 10days and I still need to plan the remaining 10 days. I will do Shanghai on the way in.

We are wondering about visiting the Toulon houses in Yongding and visiting Xiamen before heading to Shanghai. Have you travelled in Fujian?

Thanks for your help!

The tulou are spread out and not all that easy to reach. Besides, there are so many options nearby to the W of Shanghai -- Suzhou, Hangzhou, Huangshan, the old villages, Yangzhou, Nanjing, etc. -- that there's no need to trek way over to Fujian to find someplace interesting.

Aren't Suzhou etc day trips from Shanghai? I dont think we want to stay in Shanghai for long. Suzhou and Hangzhou are in opposite directions. I have the guidebook but am so confused about how to organise this trip. We would like to do a loop from Shanghai that includes Xi'an. We dont want to go to Beijing because we did it a few years ago.
Is there an itinerary using trains and buses that you can help us plan?

They can be done as a day trip, but they are both major cities in their own right. They are both rewarding enough to spend a night in. The only reason to go back to shanghai is if you like the high roller night life there.

I dont think we want to stay in Shanghai for long. Suzhou and Hangzhou are in opposite directions.

They arent far from each other though. Go to one, then the other if you want to do both.
