I'm moving to Shenzhen in a few weeks and am trying to get a lay of the land before I get there. One thing I'm having a hard time finding information on is gyms. I don't need pool access or anything like that, just a good selections of free weights and cardio. All the information I can find seems to have the prices ridiculously expensive. Anyone have any experience with this? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hey there, I'm a native Chinese in my 5th year working in Shenzhen.
This city is as expensive as Shanghai, so expect prices to be on par.
That being said, most gyms here aren't well managed and run the risk of bankrupcy after a few years. The market model is pretty bad, imo.
So DO NOT buy 2+ yrs of membership, even when baited with much lower prices, unless you've done your homework.
For your reference, I bought a membership for 3k/year(2012-2014), then 2k/year(2014-2018), and consider myself VERY LUCKY that my gyms continue to exist to this day. These are located in the city center, so prices are higher than outskirts like LONGHUA.
Normally, it's anywhere between 2k-6k, depending on the gym. Don't rely on the internet too much, find a gym location, check it out yourself, have at least 3-4 options(let the sales guy know your options) and bargain.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if I need to pay the full amount up front or if they will accept monthly or quarterly payments? I don't really want to pay for a full year if the gyms not going to be there in a few months.
I would suggest paying a full amount, as periodical payments might include an interest (that the gym forgets to tell you).
Use common sense to determine if the gym's failing. It's the same everywhere.
