Ok so basic bit of background info here, im an 25 year old male from the UK and i've decided to defer my university graduation untill 2017 to take a gap year.

I started my trip in Thailand, moving on to Laos, Cambodia. Now I am heading to China. Got the China visa in Vietnam, where I am right now. I wish to take the Transsiberian train to Moscow from China. I plan to go off the train in Irkutsk and Ekaterinburg for a day or two.

My main challenge now is the visa for Russia. Does anyone here have done it? Is it possible to apply for a russian tourist visa (30 days is enough) in either Beijing?

"Arranging a Russian visa in Beijing: It's reported that the Russian embassy in Beijing will not issue tourist visas for Russia to anyone except Chinese residents, although a more recent report (early 2012) says that they now will, at least to Dutch passport holders, so by all means ask them. However, they can certainly provide you with a transit visa, valid up to 10 days. It costs around £70 and can be obtained in 1 day. This will get you home, but will not allow you to stop off anywhere, other than as necessary to change trains in Moscow."
There is much, much more information on the Trans Siberian on this website. Seat 61 is the best website for train travel and updates.

If you're passing through Hong Kong, there are reports that the Russian consulate there is more open to issuing travellers with tourist visas. British passport holders get 180 days' stay in Hong Kong, so by the consulate's terms are usually considered "resident."

But you'll still need the usual documentation for a Russian tourist visa.

Trying to get a Russian visa in Beijing when I lived there got me nowhere and I decided to travel to Greece instead.

If going Asia to Europe, and you don't have a Chinese residency card from work that you are doing there or similar, then best to try getting the RU visa in Hong Kong.
