If it comes down to it, you can still get a one year mutliple entry L visa.
"No congressman in his right mind would support this."

elovemer Send your passport to a visa service that specializes in China in the US. Tell them you want a multiple entry tourist visa and it is quite likely you will get one. But do NOT expect this to happen an any consulate except in the US. There are several services mentioned here in this thread.

Sorry this is later being posted
As a British passport holder I went last week and got a double entry visa for 1250 HK $ (30 days each entry). Forever bright was frantic with people before 10 am, so I went to the other agency on the square - Japan Travel Agency in East Ocean Centre, I was the only person there so calmly handed my papers in. Above price included them arranging flights. I used letter of invitation so I didn't need hotel bookings. I collected at 2 pm next day.
thewong - You can always arrive before 5 pm and if they have your visa earlier, you will have more time
I would like to present the other side of China - than posted by dianauni and eurozhongguo - I have visited many times since 1996 and now lived here for 2 years. I have been made very welcome - in fact some people get fed up with many people calling out hello + welcome to China. I have also had more help from Chinese than I ever would get in the west - people taking me in Taxi's, spending 1 - 2 hours helping me and refusing to let me pay for the taxi .... if you smile at people, especially if they are not officials you nearly always get smiles back.
so 'newbie's to China don't be put off, come and have a fantastic time in this country with fantastic sights to see

Japan Travel is very efficient, but for several years they have not handled American passports.

If you send your passport from Bangkok, it should be back in your hands with the visa in 2 to 3 weeks.

Anyone had experience of getting a chinese visa in Macau? Agencies? At the border? Not going until Dec & have cheap flight to Macau but have to go to Guilin for a wedding so planning to bus/train it, so only have tickets in/out Macau. I have an Australian passport.
