Hi! I was wondering if anyone could recommend which city , Beijing,Shanghai or Xian would be best to buy authentic oriental style rugs at the best price as well as specific markets or vendors. I've been told the Hong Qiao market in Beijing is pretty good. A friend said he picked up a 3x5 silk blend for 2500 Y after HARD bargaining. Any help would be much appreciated!

Meiya handwoven Tibetan rugs from Qinghai are the best Tibetan rugs made in Tibet. They are all handwoven by Tibetans using Tibetan wool. They are just getting ready to open a showroom in Xining within the next few days. The will be selling carpets for only a fraction of what they sell them in the US and Europe. I was told they are selling rugs at Y35 per square foot to celebrate the opening of this showroom. The normal price is between Y120 to Y200 per square foot. You can email them for more information.

In my experience, of the three places you mention Xi'an is a bit cheaper - of course depending on your bargaining skills.

seems like there are some pretty famous classic oriental style rug makers in tianjin if you make it out there while in beijing. and beijing and xi'an should both have what you are looking for, i just don't know where or for how much
