I find "local" beer to be the best buy in most provinces in China - most of it is fine if you like a light style. I pay 2.5 for a cold can in small shops. Currently my "local" is Hai Zhu.

Sure there is. Many places have it.

In Wuhu they used to have 12 bottles of Changjiang Beer for 10 yuan. Dirt cheap, but would leave you unable to walk the next day even after 2 or 3...

And there's the difference. Bia Hoi places don't sell bottled beer, they sell draft beer. The beer is young, fresh and light (the reason why people stay there the whole day), it's served ice cold, usually a full menu is offered and not just snacks.
Of course I know there are beer gardens in China, probably even with draft beer.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I'm looking forward to trying as many from the east coast right out to urumiqi.

#13: yes, I know the difference. The beer from Wuhu was not a reference to Bia Hoi. Bia Hoi places do exist in China.

The summer draughts sometimes have a little baijiu added to them, gives them a nice kick. I like Harbin's brew, don't know if it's the same one #1 is speaking of, followed by Qingdao.

#16, yes that's the one in #1.
So far the outstanding ones for me are Snow (from Shenyang) and San Kong (from Qufu).
Cheers!
