Hi all,
I have a stop over in Guangzhou, arrive at 0740hr 9th Dec and leave 0940hr 11 Dec. I was thinking of staying near the airport due to the relatively early start on departure time and do some sight seeing from the airport area. Is there local transport to the city proper? Can you recommend a budget hotel? Or should I stay in the Shamian Island area which seems to be the centre. I would like to visit Nansha wetland park or and Baiyun Mountain but not sure it would be feasible and the weather may not be in my favor at this time.
Any suggestions appreciated
Thanks
Guangzhou's airport is on it's metro. It is not difficult to get to. You might want a hotel on Line 3 as then you will not need to transfer. I stayed over near by not on Shamian island(I was south of the river across from it)
Guangzhou's metro system is ridiculously easy to use - payment machines have English options and all stations have names written in English as well as Chinese. English announcements about the next station are clearer than those in Australia (Sydney train drivers should be sent to Guangzhou for training.)

If they are anything like Washington DC announcements. The proper correction is not to send the current staff for retraining but just replacing the current staff with new ones.
Thanks, staying near line 3, that's good to know. Did you check the city out by yourself or a tour?

I toured it myself. Cities are usually pretty easy to get around, Chinese cities sometimes more so. Just get a good map and wander around seeing what you want to see.

I particularly like wandering in the old part of the city, between Chen Clan Academy and the river. Near the river is the spice and medicine market and then the fish market. The area around Dongshangkou is great too. Food is particularly good in Guangzhou and you might want to go to a Yum cha place.
Thanks violets, does anyone have a recommendation on a place to stay (budget) before I hit the search? I will visit the
Baiyun Mountain area as a day trip.
Cheers
