My 6 month tourist visa in India is due to expire a few weeks before I wish to leave the country, even though I will have only been in India for 2 months. I have heard that its pretty much impossible to get an extension in India itself, but maybe I can go to Nepal (as I have planned anyway) to be issued with a new 6 month Indian tourist visa???

On the train from Varkala to Trivandrum I met a women who teaches science at a school near Trivandrum. Her name is Sister Vianpey (or Vianney?) and she would like volunteers to help teach English, and perhaps help with setting up a computer at the school. You wouldn't be paid money but I think you would have a free room and food. The students, young boys and girls, pay 100 rupees/month tuition, so obviously the school is not rolling in money.

Can you travellers tell me, in the 60s and 70s there was a classic overland hippy trail. I think it was something like Istanbul to Kathmandu. Was that it? What countries did it include? Does anyone publish a current guide to the route? What changes have been made due to regional politics.

Also, are there other routes that are considerred classic 'hippy' trails of the 60s and 70s.
