I'm just about off at the very last minute for a month. I'll be staying with friends in Varkala. I would like to experince girivalam. Does anyone have any advice, experiences they'd like to share. How long should I plan to stay, where should I stay, etc.? Should I go at the full moon? I'm thirsty for travellers experiences.
Thanks all.

We had a very enjoyable houseboat cruise in the Backwaters of Kerala state, thanks in great part to Vikram, who is a gourmet cook as well as a friendly and informative interlocutor. The company is Lakelands, its web site is www.lakelandscruise.com and the boat leaves from Alleppey.

On the other hand, we had a negative experience with The Travel Planners travel agency, which rearranged the order of our itinerary in an illogical fashion so that we spent more time on the road and less time doing…

An excellent way to get around Sri Lanka is with a car and driver. We paid $650 for two people for a week and got a comfortable car and gentlemanly driver named Hasanti, who anticipated our every wish. The price also included hotels and breakfasts. Hasanti went with us on most of the sightseeing and gave us some historical and cultural explanations. The company he works for, Journey Lanka Tours, was flexible and cheerfully accommodated my last-minute changes in the itinerary. Their email…

Hi, I have been searching the web but to no avail. Does anyone know if you can get a boat from Thailand (or anywhere else for that matter) to The Andaman Islands to stay. I know I need a special permit and I know there are boats from The Andamans to mainland India (so I can leave) but if anyone know about this I would be so happy!

If you are headed up to Langtang National Park, north of Kathmandu, I could use your help.

I trekked through the valley in March 2003, and met a wonderful family in the tiny "village" of Thangshyap. Upon returning home, I decided to help them out by paying for one of their sons to go to school in a nearby town. A friend of their family helped to coordinate the money transfer---I've been sending them some money once each year, and he picks it up and gets it to the family, who then pay the…

Does anyone know of, or can recommend, a cooking course available in India on (obviously) Indian cooking? Im considering northern/central India for a visit next Fall, and would be interested in taking a multiple day cooking course. Any info would be appreciated.
