Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Bangladesh

Hi
Would kindly ask you for a recent information regarding formalities about visa on arrival to Dhaka Airport. I'm a citizen of European Union.
Would be happy for some hints about Hotel in Dhaka, for a renge of max 2000BDT per room.Rgds, Robin

Hotels in Dhaka:
IN New Dhaka specially Banani & Gulshan Area Viator Guest house, Salon Guest Hose, Hotel Far Inn, Banani Guest House (Budge Hotel New Arrival), Hotel Chalet in Gulshan, Subrina's Home etc, all hotels are good and professional in service.

VOA is very easy. Just show your passport, pay the fees (USD 51) and you will be stamped for 4 weeks.

Reg Hotel, you will find some hotels within 2400 in Banani and Gulshan area. I am giving a link of some hotels. Please check and contact : http://www.trip2bangladesh.com/hotel-recommendation/

Visa on arrival: there were countless threads but they may have gone with the recent thorntree problems!

Essentially, turn up, pay $51, done!

3

Remember to get BDT70 change for your extra one dollar. The actual cost is USD50 + BDT7.

Thanks a lot for your kind replys!
I'm greatful for all the names of hotels but have problems to book a room b'cos for most of them I don't find an email address. Would appreciate any contacts of those hotels.

5

In which part of Dhaka do you want to stay?

6

Hi tranceybowler
I would prefer to stay near old part of town, b'cos we would like to make a riksha tour around it and I think that would be from Gulshan or Banani a bit too far.

7

I agree, it's better to stay in that area unless you have business in Gulshan / Banani.

Unfortunately most hotels in Old Dhaka won't have an email address and even if they do they won't check it. The exception is Hotel Pacific but most people say it's overpriced (i haven't stayed there myself though).

If I were you I wouldn't worry about booking a hotel, just turn up and they will almost certainly have a room! I stayed in Hotel New York off Topkhana Road but I wouldn't really recommend it. Perhaps Mahmud can suggest somewhere in your price range.

tranceybowler is right. There are so many hotels in Old Dhaka but problem is that they dont take advance booking. I am sure that u will get rooms. I can recommend some hotel in that area :

  • Hotel Ramna, Gulistan.
  • Hotel Preetom, Paltan.
  • Hotel New York, Tokhana.
  • Hotel Deluxe, Topkhana Rd (Only Taka 600 for double room)

So, dont worry for hotels in Dhaka.

Hi, does anybody on this thread know if just turning up and paying will be sufficient for an Aussie citizen travelling from Nepal!? Haven't been able to successfully contact the embassies in Australia or Nepal and need to know ASAP whether to cancel my flights.

i already replied his thread..thank u..

Thanks guys a lot for your kind help!
I have some more Q's:
Do you think that I wan't have a problem finding five rooms, b'cos we are 11 people?
Could you maybe tell me what would transport should we take from the airport? Somebody offered me a minibus for 4000BDT but I think that is a lot for a short ride. I presume that on Saturday morning is not a bad time for transfer from the airport, isn't it?
Is the exchange rate at the airport and in the centre the same?

5 rooms? Hmm, I think Mahmud will have to answer that one!

About transport from the airport, 4000 taka does seem rather a lot. However I guess the alternative for 11 people would be to take 3 x taxis at around 1000 taka each (depending on bargaining) so actually the minibus doesn't seem so bad. Again perhaps Mahmud can give his opinion here!
