$US would generally be easier but you shouldn’t have any problem with Sterling£. Probably the recommendation would be taking a couple of Credit/Debit Cards to use and about £200 cash as emergency backup.

Both are fine. It's worth taking a little emergency cash for if you lost the TCs or something. I remember I once had just a Sunday to change some cheques, but most places were closed & those open were being fussy about my signature.

I took about 200 USD with me in TC's but didn't need them. I ended up cashing a bit one day cause the exchange place was a little closer than an ATM. Lots of hassle though with paperwork, etc. My Mastercard with ATM priviledge was accepted without fail at all State Bank of India and ICCI ATM's, which were in every town and city I visited.
I also had two back up credit cards ans some US and Euro and Sterling cash............all uneeded. I guess it depends on your comfort level and backup back home if you need to get bailed out. If you get your TC's without a service charge, there's certainly no reason not to take some for peace of mind if nothing else.
Have fun.
