| garyewer08:47 UTC06 May 2009 | Five years ago we (2 families) visit Haputale and stayed at the Kelbourne Tea Estate
This summer we want to do something similar (but not so costly)
Any suggestions - we have 2/3 days at the beginning of August
Thanks

| rod_b18:30 UTC06 May 2009 | Hi Gary, you know, there's nothing more annoying , than typing an answer to a post, clicking send and it all vanishes. Thats what I did earlier in answer to your query.
Actually, thinking about it, i suppose just missing a train could be more annoying, or being run over by a bus, or, yea, I spose there's lots of things more annoying.
Anyway, what do you mean ?. Is it staying in Haputale but finding somewhere cheaper and better. Or staying somewhere similar to Haputale.
If it's the first, then there's a lovely guest house in Haputale which I always stay in when there. The Sri Lak View Holiday Inn, 48 herwood Road, Haputale. Tel;..................+94-(0)-57-2268125 Walk to the bottom of the man street, the road curves to the rght. On that curve there's a track running to the left. Along there about 150 metrs on the right. Great , en-suite roms, Excellent restaurant and views down onto valley and lesser peaks from just about everywhere. If you've nothing planned.. A short bus ride to the Tea Plantation and then the walk to Liptons seat. And,, another bus ride, a little further on the Wellawaya bus, to the Diyulama falls.. Enjoy the falls and then walk down the hill a little way. On the left you'll find a track that runs back up the hill paralel with the road. This takes you to the top of the falls where there are natural rock pools to bathe in... It's a beautiful spot.
If it's the later, Then I'd suggest going a little further south on the train , as far as Ella. Where Haputale is a bustling mountain town, Ella is a small sleepy village. Couple of good places to stay there.
The Sun Top Inn, 18 Police Station Road, Ella. Tel;...................+94-(0)-57-2228673 Email.................suntopinn@sltnet.lk A small family bungalow with three rooms they let. Seperate entrance, very comfortable and real home family cooking. Or The Tea garden Holiday Inn. Ella. Tel;..................+94-(0)-57-2228860 This one is also a great place to say . If you do go there, ask for the top rooms. There are two rooms set up abve everything else. Lovely rooms with a huge wrap around 270 degree balcony. Views to die for with Ella Rock ( a mountain ) on the right,,, Little Adam Peak, ( another mountain ) on the left and the lla Gap in the centre. I don't have the full address for this one in spite of staying there 3 or 4 times but walk down the main village street, at the bottom the road curves to the right and just around the curve, the Tea garden is set above the road on the right. Both Ella Rock and Little Adams peak are worth walking to but everywere you look there is beautiful scenery. From Ella, there's a couple of straight through buses down to the south coast or the train going north through the hill country and back t Kandy. Rod..

| rod_b18:34 UTC06 May 2009 | Me again, Sorry for the missng letters in that post. My comp. is teasing me . In the first address, it shouldbe Sherwood, not herwood Road.. Couple of other places there's letters missing but they don't matter. I really must move on from this steam driven computer and move onto a clockwork one..

| gypsyjandy05:45 UTC10 May 2009 | My husband & I had planned to "do" Sri Lanka until we met Karnal de Silva (by chance) on the train south from Columbo. We had the best 2 weeks with him - he has an historian's knowledge of the island, took us where we wanted to go, but was able to offer suggestions and the trip turned out cheaper and less stressful than we'd imagined, plus we learnt a lot about this beaautiful place. Have a look at his web site www.karnaldesilva.com and see what you think. Have a good time - we Australians did!

| garyewer06:59 UTC11 May 2009 | Hi Sorry I was very vague I suppose we are looking for somewhere with great views a bit of comfort, in the hills
We loved Kelbourne - but is was sooo pricey and we love Haputale
We have been to Ella on another trip and stay at The Ambiente
so I guess we are just looking for recommendations, hills and views, a town, maybe places to walk visit.
I will look up the places you suggested - many thanks
Last time to Haputale we took the train - which was a good experience, when we went to Ella we took adriver up from Yala
This time we will be coming from Colombo and will aim for a driver - do you have any contacts?
if you have any other thoughts?
Thnaks Gary

| rod_b09:59 UTC11 May 2009 | Hi Gary, Look top right of the page and you'll see a little title there... It says, " Private Messages " Click on that and you can send or recieve private messages from any other Thorn Tree member. If it doesn't work, just go into your profile and click "allow private messages ".
The reason I sent the info in there is because, in the past, there's been lots of Sri Lankans, and I assume other nationalities , on other pages, using the main page as free advertising. Rod.
