Sri Lanka with toddler Oct-Dec - where's best?

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Sri Lanka

I've just booked flights to Sri Lanka for myself and my son who will be three. We will be flying into Colombo at the beginning of October. I plan to spend a couple of nights in Negombo before heading south, I'm thinking to Mirissa.
I'm wondering whether this is the best place? We want somewhere beachy and chilled where we can settle for the full trip, maybe making a couple of trips of around a week to national parks etc.
I'm also wondering whether anybody can recommend the best way of going about finding semi long term accommodation and how much we could expect to pay. I would ideally like to rent a very simple one bed apartment or studio apartment.

Any thoughts on the above gratefully received.

As far as I know there will be rough seas with somewhat clear weather in Mirissa.
Yala and Udawalawe are closer to Mirissa but you have to put couple of hours to the travelling..

Hmmm seems like I have made a bit if a mistake here. Seems weather during these months will be very unsettled throughout Sri Lanka!
Am thinking now if spending a few weeks in the central area and east coast before heading off to south east Asia, and perhaps extending my trip, coming back to Sri Lanka for the better weather after Christmas.
