Social Life In Kathmandu

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal

So where does one go to enjoy the night life and meet travelers in Kathmandu? Any ideas???

Night life in Kathmandu is not a huge scene but most of what is happening is right in the Thamel area - restaurants, bars, etc. and it wraps up relatively early compared to many parts of the world. But they rock - loudly if nothing else - while they are in session. Several have live music. All the 5-star hotels in town have Casinos if you are into that scene. Ex-pat community sponsors various musical concerts from time to time in the National Permforming Arts Centre and elsewhere. There a a couple of theatres that show English movies and many with Hindi movies. The closest theatre to the Thamel area is not far from the Royal Palace - called Jai Nepal. It has an English language movie on a fairly regular basis. There are several good Nepali restaurants interesting cultural programs. My favourite is Bojan Ghria - good food and enjoyable entertainment in an old, renovated Rana Palace cum restaurant.
Many Nepali people work at least 6 days out of seven - many of them 10 and 12 hour days - so they retire early and are up with the sun. That schedule doesn't encourage a lot of play time and accounts for why they make up for lost time on Festival Days!

You will probably meet up with fellow travellers at your hotel, Sometimes even before as you are often met at the airport by rather persuasive people who talk you into staying at their hotel, even though you might have a perfectly god plan of your own ;-)
The Garden at Pilgrims Guest House is a good place to start
I have also written up a few more ideas in the tips section of
