Robbery in Sri Lanka

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Sri Lanka

I write to inform that I was robbed in Kandy, Sri Lanka end of Jan 2016.
I stayed in a guest house, on the third night of my stay, the owner and his partner showed the knife, they checked my luggage to find valuables, they took my cash and credit cards. Moreover, they used force and threatening manner in order to get the password for the credit cards. I supposed that I am not the only case and there are more before.

I do recommend tourists not to stay in remote hotels/guest houses.
(to stay one with many other hotels/guesthouses around only)
Do not stay in without other tourists (you are the only tourist)
Do have money in the account enough for the visit only
Do bring cash enough for the visit only

I do believe that most of people in Sri Lanka are nice and kind, but
I was not lucky to have this experience.

Yes, Police did follow the case but thief ran away quickly.
I returned home few days later.
I sent the Police e-mails but no reply !
not sure if thief are police and vice versa.

Telling us which Guest House would be useful.

How remote was this place? Was it a genuine GH?

It all sounds a bit odd, how can the owner of a GH run away?

4

you have to get in contact with the Tourism authorities, this is a very serious issue, and impacting not only you but many others, and also the owners of the similar guest houses.
I just wonder that your account is just created yesterday, so did you just created this account to report this case? quite strange for me!

5

Sorry to hear that! Just give us some hints.

Is it a GH that you booked on the web, like booking.com etc..? Or a tout took you there?

How far and which direction(eg SE) from the temple of tooth?

6

It is Blue Moon Tourist Inn, the guy name is Mohamad,
not sure related terrorist group or not.
(I supposed they will change name, contact and location after my case)

Police went to the hotel twice after my report but noody was there.
Moreover, the police did phone the thief once and cut the line later.

7

As I mentioned above, I sent few emails to police but no reply.
do not expect them that they can help much.
(perhaps, it is correct that thief are police and police are thief)
I sent my case to police in Colombo as well few days ago, but no reply so far

I open the account in order to tell tourists my experience.
I know that I am not the first case, but if nobody is willing to share,
other toursts do not know and my case happen and happen again, perhaps, everyday.

I arrived late evening in Kandy and could not find the hotel areas.
The guy drove around and said that he has a guesthouse, he can drive to check.
I just followed him. the hotel is in Rivedale, it is far away from central Kandy,
(you can check the map where it is)

Maybe it's time to ask your own gov for help. They can contact the SL embassy on your behalf.

Here is the page of the tourist authority website. http://www.srilanka.travel/contact_details

There are some email addresses at the bottom. One to the tourist police. Email them the details and add a link to this to show we are all watching.

Well done for reporting. Would you mind roughly giving your age and if male/female.

It seems odd for anyone to rob someone in their (the criminal's) home, since it would be relatively easy for the police to track them down. Eventually the owner of the home will return, right? It would have been much easier for the driver to rob you and throw you out of the car. For this reason, and because of your odd comment about terrorism, I must admit some skepticism about this whole affair. But my apologies if you actually were robbed.

Also... I can't find a "Blue Moon" anything in Kandy, but there is a jewelry store called Blue Moon Gold House in Old Peradeniya, which is a few km from Kandy. Is that the same general area? There's also a Blue Moon Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, which I assume is unrelated since it's several hours away. Of course if this is really a criminal enterprise, I wouldn't expect to find a website for it.

12

Ha, if you are a thief, will you register on any site ?
Definitely no, it is a silly people to do it.

The hotel owner is surely to rent the guesthouse only,
if something go wrong, can escape at once.

13

it's really strange. will anybody just run away from a guest house to cover up a robbery? i mean the owner.
