| shelleywoo20:26 UTC03 Sep 2007 | Hi, We will be in Nepal at the beginning of October for 10 days. We fly into Katmandu. We want to trek for 5 nights. We are reasonably fit and love hiking, but I really suffered with altitude sickness at 12,000+ feet in Peru so did not necessarily want to deal with this again.
1. Can someone please recommend a good 5 day trekking option? We would like views of Everest if possible.
2. Do we need to start trekking from Pokura? Is so, what is the best way to get there?
3. Can anyone recommend a good guide or company that organises small group walking tours?
4. How is the accommodation on the trek? Are the lodges preferable to camping?
Thanks a million. Shelley

1. Since you had problems at 12,000 the everest region is probably not the option for you unless you go slowly and spend time acclimatizing.
2. Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region. You could try the Poon Hill trek which is easy.
3. Walk around Thamel or in Lakeside/Damside Pokhara. Many agencies there if you want things organized.
4. Which trek? Yes if there is a lodge, I would prefer that.
happy travelling

- Can someone please recommend a good 5 day trekking option? We would like views of Everest if possible.
-I agree that Poon hill is the best option, good views of the Annapurnas. Everest isn't really possible with just 5 days.
2. Do we need to start trekking from Pokura? Is so, what is the best way to get there?
-Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurnas so if you trek there then yes, you go to Pokhara. It is most of a day by bus from KTM to Pokhara and easily arranged. A plane gets there in an hour or so, not sure of the cost.
3. Can anyone recommend a good guide or company that organises small group walking tours?
-I wouldn't recommend a guide or trekking with a group but there are many companies in KTM and Pokhara. Wait until you arrive to book.
4. How is the accommodation on the trek? Are the lodges preferable to camping?
-Lodges are an excellent way to trek. There really is no need to pack tents and camping stuff when lodges are available in all the main trekking areas.
From what I understand about altitude sickness just because you got it once doesn't mean you'll get it again. If you do try again just go slowly to elevation so you have time to acclimate.

- No treks of 5-days with views of Everest. Too far to get in there. The one option would be to fly to Lukla, walk to Namche, layover 2 days there and hike to vantage points of Everest and then walk back to Lukla in time to fly back to Kathmandu. This is very doable. Other than that, I'd recommend Langtang area. If altitude is a problem, skip Poon Hill.
2. You get to Pokhara by bus. But, I'd advise against this, as seen in my answer to #1. Langtang or Namche are your best bets. 3. Yes, if you send me a private message. I prefer not to give my recommendations in the forum. 4. In all treks mentioned by anyone here, the lodging is good. Stay in the tea houses, and don't camp, regardless which trek you do.

| tegan_erlivia13:44 UTC06 Sep 2007 | As others have suggested, fly to Lukla and trek to Namche (2 days). Take a day to walk up the hill behind Namche where you can get quite good views of Everest. You will get to a height of about 4000 m, but because you decend again into Namche you shouldn't have any problems, if you do, it would only take you an extra hour or two to decend to teh next villiage which is at about 2500m.

| la_vache00:47 UTC11 Sep 2007 | Namche itself is 11,300' altitude, so probably not a good choice.
Flights to Pokhara are ~$75 one way. Tourist bus runs about $15.
