I want to purchase mosquito netting for my 2 month trip around India. The only place I've found in Montreal has 2 kinds, one with very small holes or one with bigger holes and its soaked in pyrmethrin (I think that's what it's called? it's an insect repellent). He said the one with the pyrmethrin was against malaria mosquitos and that they couldnt get through that size, the other was more for just keeping away annoying mosquitos in North America. So if smaller mosquitos could possibly get through the big size, I'm just wondering, what size are the other types in India? Could the mosquitos that carry denge be smaller and maybe get through?

Also, to those who've travelled with a net, how have you found the ones that you must hook to the ceiling? Do most hotels have something set up to attach them already? Should I just order one of the ones that sets up like a tent?

I never heard that explanation for using permithrin and don't know how true it is. A treated net may be good. But, I have never used one or had any problems in that regard. I find you have to be ingenious about hanging nets. Carry about 10 meters of braided nylon cord and run a line across the room if need be. The framed tents weigh significantly more and weight is a big issue for me. I dumped the frame and always found some way to hang it..

'LIFESYSTEMS' mosquito nets, impregnated with Pemethrin, last up to 2 years, you can get them at most good camping/outdoor stores. Indian nets tend to tear on jagged toes nails, also you would probably have to have one made and in anycase the net is either too thick or too big, remember you have to breath through it during the night. I'd go for the LIFESYSTEMS DUO as it big enough for a kingsize bed so plenty to tuckin, comes in a small bag with plastic cross tube and cord and hook. If the hotel/guest house dosen't have a ceiling hook, get them to screw one in.

I use a tent with corner attachments, and have about 3 meters of light cord per corner. Hotels will probably not have fixed attachmetns points for nets. Youhave to be creative and use anything within reach, such as curtain rods, light fixtures, wall hooks for pictures (I remove the pictures from the wall). This is the most flexible way to go.

If the web weave is small enough you really do not need the permethrin impregnation. It's a small bonus if it's there. But, #2 is correct, if the weave is too small you might have some problems with air circulation, especially if it's humid. Keeping a room fan on helps in this situation.

If you're still at a bit of a loss about how to hang nets, PM me your email and I'll send you some photos.

are pyrmethrin sprays readily available in India? Could I find it in a pharmacy?
