Karakoram Highway

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Pakistan

Have any foreigners been up the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad since the attacks at the end of June?
If so how did you do this and how was the security? If anyone has heard confirmation that part or all of the KKH is now closed to foreigners or that the border with China has been closed please let me know.
Thanks.

I came with 5 french friends (last Sunday) from Islamabad to Hunza,many other foreign traveling making their way on every day basis on KKH without any security problem after the attack.

KKH is open for foreigners all the way from Islamabad/Rwalpindi to Khunjerab pass (Pak-China border).

Thanks,K2
Did you use public transport-bus or minibus? And how long did it take to get to Gilgit?
Any roadblocks along the way?
Cheers.

Hi all,

I am heading to PAkistan.. According to some diplomatic sources in Islamabad, the KKH is still closed in the region of Chilas because this area has become "restricted to foreigners" for security reasons" while K2_heights said the contrary. Hope you are right , K2_heights because I want to travel through the KKH.

Cheers,

@2,
We went on a hired mini bus from Islamabad,it took us about 17 hrs.

@3,
The KKH is open all the way to Gilgit & onwards,the info you got from diplomatic source in Islamabad has nothing to do with ground reality.

Last week, I traveled the KKH from Skardu to Islamabad. As reported by K2, it was open and there was no issues along the way. There were many check points and foreigners had to register their passport number and Visa number in a book. An armed policeman rode in our private mini bus about 50 - 75 kms each side of Chilas. We exchanged policman about every hour.
