Jeep from Kathmandu to Salleri during Dashain?

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience/current info on travelling to Salleri during Dashain? Our guesthouse owner has suggested that everything will be out of order for the next few days, and when we popped into Shona's the nice husband (never caught his name!) said it would probably be worth cutting our losses and getting the bus to Jiri and walking in from there instead.

We're doing EBC and 3HP and walking in and out so we could still mix it up and walk out of Salleri, but if possible we'd like to come in via Salleri and out via Jiri - if anyone has any suggestions we'd be happy to hear them. Cheers!

Have you been to Chabahil and asked for Jeep tickets?

In the last few days, all the transport from Ktm has been fully booked and crowded, but this will end now, when all the Nepalis who wanted to leave Ktm have left. In 2 or 3 days, the transport out of Ktm will rather be empty.
Also i don't believe most GH staff has much competence about this.

Hi both,

Thanks for your replies.

We went to Chabahil this morning and every travel agent/ticketing service we found was shut. I have a couple of company names and contact numbers but no luck with booking a ticket. Back in Thamel we asked in a couple of travel agents if they knew anything/could recommend anything but the response seemed to be "nothing right now, maybe in a few days. Possibly Monday".

Now we're trying to weigh up going to Ratna Park tomorrow and booking the bus to Jiri, or holding out on a little hope that something might be running to Salleri/Phaplu on Monday. Jiri would be a Sunday departure, Salleri a Monday/Tuesday departure (hopefully!) but coming into Salleri would save us 3-4 days on the trail, or so I've read, so it might just be worth holding out in KTM.

We're staying in pretty cheap digs and not spending much on food so it's not a huge issue, it's just eating into our potential Pokhara time after the trek. We fly out 7th Nov.

Hmm... decisions!

If you were originally planning a walk-out to Jiri, what's the difference in total time on trail?

+longer walk-in makes you stronger and better prepared for the high valleys.

Absolutely no difference, it was just our preference to come in at Salleri and exit at Jiri. I guess we're off to Ratna Park tomorrow morning...

Lamjura La certainly helps get you in shape (tough haul up) and helps a little with altitude acclimatisation. Junbesi a beautiful place.

To me, it makes more sense to walk in from Jiri and out from Salleri rather that other way around.

We were at Ratna Park at 10.20 this morning and the only shop front we could find (with pictures of buses, couldn't read the text) was closed - starting to feel a bit Hotel California over here...

Is it possible it closed because all the tickets were sold out, though if it serves multiple destinations (highly likely) my guess is it's just down to Dashain? Couldn't get much info out of any locals and Thamel is a ghost town right now. Luckily we quite like Kathmandu, but this is beginning to wear a bit thin.

Edit: We'll take your advice and start in Jiri, extra days for extra acclimatisation and all that.

Makes no sense hanging around KTM when you could be out trekking, even if not your ideal route??
