Indian Visa Questions

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / India

I am a US citizen living in Chiang Mai. I want to spend 4-6 days in India late December. I know I must fill out the online application and then go to the consulate in Chiang Msi to complete the process, with passport, photos, copies. I have not found answers to several other questions :

The consulate web site states that a transit visa is valid for 15 days. Is this true, and do I have to specify what type of visa I want before I go to the consulate.

If I can't get a transit visa, I assume the shortest tourist visa is 3 months. What is the cost for a UsS citizen

Do I need to print the online application in addition to submitting it on the internet

Do I need to make an appointment with the consulate or just go with my printed online application

Is the one week processing time accurate

Thanks for any information. I had a 10 year Indian visa years ago and remember it being a bit easier, but maybe I was just younger.

I don't have first hand experience in getting a visa for India in Chiang Mai, but there might be some useful info for you here:

Transit Visa's are valid for 15 days. HOWEVER ... Period of stay in transit is not to exceed 3 days. It is not to be used as a 2 week tourist Visa. You will need a T visa (Tourist)

In your online visa application, you are required to indicate what kind of a Visa your applying for.

A 6 month Tourist visa is 1700 Baht, add an extra 1000 for the US passport. Service charge of 70 Baht, IVS service charge of 15 Baht.

You need to both submit the form online, and print a copy to take with you.
