Gosaikunda Trek

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal

Hey guys, me and my friends are planning a trek to Gosaikunda. Can you tell me the best starting point? Is it Sundarijal or Dhunche?

If you start at Sunderial you can be hiking within the hour of leaving your hotel in Kathmandu but you will have to cross the Lauribina La at 4610 meters which will be hard for some and at some times of the years impossible because of the weather. If you start from Dunche there are no major obstacles to climb but you will spend eight hours or so on the bus from Kathmandu.

As an added note to Eric: the climb up to Lauribina La from Helambu is one which sees many having altitude issues (we've seen it 2x in two days), so one has to take care regarding ascent rate.

Also, while it takes 7-8 hours on the bus to Dhunche, you'll be up at Gosainkund in 3-4 days. Longer than this from Sundrijal.

Hey guys, thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it.

So we have decided to start from Dhunche. Do you recommend staying at Gosaikunda for an extra day? Just to chill and take a day off. I know that the high altitude in gosaikunda will probably make us a bit difficult to breathe , but still, we need some time away from Kathmandu.

Thanks guys.

I found Gosaikunda a little bleak but maybe I was just in a foul mood. The altitude can do that to you.
