getting clothes made in dakar

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Bangladesh

hi i know this is realllly short notice but i arived in dakar last night and want to get some clothes made, not a suit but stuff like hemp long pants or cotton pants, and cheese cloth shirts ( the stuff that is really thin and breathes well) how long should it take to get it made and how much should it cost ( roughly) also we are planning on doing the paddle boat cruise in a few days, is it worth it? we havent heard much about it...

rohthewise are you going to Senegal or Bangladesh ? Because Dakar is in Senegal ... And Dhaka in Bangladesh.

I'm guessing Dhaka (going on the rocket steamer).

Have a look at the Bango Bazaar for clothing. Lots of western styles available for next to nix and you may also be able to buy the raw material (hemp cloth) to get things made for yourself.

sorry, dhakar in bangaldesh... thanks zoltan. was there this morning it was good, also went to new market . is it just me... but since we have arived people seem to be trying to take advantage of us? every time we ask for a meal we ask the price before hand and then after wards they charge us a diffrent price... like 6 times as much at some places...we are we travelled people and know the scams and no when to trust people, but at the moment we cant even leave the hotel with out some one trying to rip us off, i know they are trying to make a living and all that... but we have had to ressort to finding someone who speaks english to get the price while we hide around a corner...is this normal behaviour from begal people?

Hiyas, not sure where you are staying, but there is a wonderful shop called Deshal in Gulshan. They use natural materials & colours & have a great range of clothing. If you can not find what you are looking for there, I'm sure they provide you with a few alternatives. They also sell a great map called "Diggin Dhaka" which lists all the shops/restaurants/cafe's etc. in the Gulshan, Banani & Dhanmondi area.

In regards to food in restaurants, I also had problems, which I raised in an earlier TT Thread whilst I was in Bangladesh. In my case, people just didn't want to serve food to us at all & we had to walk out of a few places & look else where... I think it's something you just have to get used to, as no one here was able or willing to explain in the thread why this was happening...

Must admit I've never encountered the problems with excessive prices for food.

I used to eat most meals at the Hotel Ramna in Gulishan and the prices were always accurate and the food good.

Just try some of the local dhabbas and don't be fooled into paying higher prices for the foods - there should not be an us and them mentality.

Cheers
