Getting around Srinagar and Pahalgam

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / India

We are looking to go to Srinagar, Pahalgam and Sonamar and we'd like to know if it's feasible to get a 4WD tour that combines driving to the best scenic places and hiking in the mountains (1/2 day hikes mostly) or a combination of driving and hiking and camping. We are looking to stay in the area for 3 days...
How feasible would it be to go to Kolohi Glacier and how close could we get to it 4WD driving?
How many hours driving from Pahalgam to the Meadow of Gold?

Any suggestions/recommendations of reputable tour agencies?

By now you will have noticed that there aren't so many people who have been to Kashmir on this forum. That is an indication of the number of tourists in Kashmir as well.

Yes, you can do this with a jeep. Try going to number 1 taxi stand ( i think) and hire a driver for yourself but if you do this, you will probably need a guide book so you can tell the driver where you want to go. Otherwise, you will probably need to find a tour operator.

Adventure Tourism is listed in LP as an agent who can refer you to guides. 10-4pm mon-sat. ph 2472644. Also try asking at the tourist reception centre.

I don't think you have enough time to go to all three places properly in three days. srinagar is in between Pah.. and Sonnamarg and they are both fairly long drives - a rough guess 2 hours one way. You will be doing a lot of driving. also its not the season for flowers in saffron, that is in October so it might be best just to go to Sonnamarg.

I would try to get a copy of LP just to photocopy the pages from this kashmir section if that's all you are doing.

I stayed in a houseboat. the king boat run by nazi he provided trips and cars to sonamarg everywhere for that matter. our hoseboat was located on the gorgeous lake dal in the center of town

i'm not sure if you've already gone but from aru to kolahoi glacier is about a 8-10 hour hike one way. the tourist information centre beside the bus station in srinagar is a good place to get in touch with guides. dont book through a houseboat. i went with a guy called 'tota' or gullam rassol. you can contwct him through kamran guest house in srinigar 01942500368 or local no. 2477268. He's reliable, knowledable and trustworthy. The glacier is well worth the trek. you can drive srinigar to aru (north of pahalgam) in about 2 hours.
