hi

I was wondering if anyone had turned up in any of the himalaya cities or towns ( eg. Leh, Manali) and organised a trek while there.

I'm investigating a trek for the summer but the companies where you pre book are out of budget and are very rigid!

If anyone can give me advice on this i would really appreciate it!

yeah i went on an organised group trek that i booked in leh. Can't remember the exact cost but it wouldn't have been more than $15. that was 3 years ago. basically there are company's offering treks in leh and also plenty of traveller's looking for people to go on treks with. not sure but the same is probably true in manali. i shouldn't think they'll be any problem with sorting it out there.

There were treks that could be organized within a few days in both leh and manali. I did a short one out of manali towards dharmasala (via foot), just beautiful...

take a look at LP trekkking in indian himalaya for options. treks are easily arranged out of leh and manali during season. the indian institute of mountaineering should have a branch in manali that can help you out too. for day hikes, try hiking near solang nullah near manali.

happy travelling

If you are going peak season (July and August) expect 300-400 rupees per day per horse if you have your own equipment and food, and are not doing a package deal.

If you are going off-season (June and September) expect 250 rupees per day per horse for treks close to Leh, such as Markha Valley, and 300-350 rupees if further away.

Don't forget that if you are doing a one-way trek, you have to pay half price for days that the ponyman walks back to Leh.

Organized treks that provide everything from gear to tent to sleeping bag to food, and horses, guide and cook, run about $25 to $40 per person per day, depending on the trek, and how good at negotiating you are.

You can organize your trek once there, or join up with a group already going.
Send me a private message if you want their emails.
But, I have 2 friends in Leh that organize treks if you want this done in advance
