Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Sri Lanka

Hey,

We are leaving cold london and are heading to sunny sri lanka. We are on a realy tight budget and are wanting to stay for a month. We need a few suggestions as to where we will find dirt cheap accommodation. Can anyone help us?????

Cheers,
Amanda

Hi,
Cheapest place I know is a little bungalow in Badulla. Lovely retired couple let a double room for 400 rupees. But,, you won't wanna spend 4 weeks in Badulla.
others may have better tips than me for staying at rock bottom prices but a few things ,,
When you're on the coast,, look jungle side of the coast road. Beach side is allways more expensive. Don't be afraid to ask to see the rooms and facilities, then wander around and compare with other places. I know it makes you feel a little guilty sometimes but if you need to keep rock bottom prices , then it's better to be there spending a little than not being there at all.
When you're looking inland, you'll usually find the cheaper places spread around the outskirts of the town rather than in the centre. Anmd often tucked away down little lanes .. The main road places get seen first , so can afford to charge a little more.

You'll probably find, you can save more money on where you eat , more than where you stay. Breakfast in your guest house. Lunch try a couple of pastries from the local village shop, gorgeous curry fillings and from about 10 to 20 rupees each. Two are a good lunch.
Again, evening meal, eat in local cafes, not tourist hotels or restaurants. The little local cafes usually have a sign up saying " Hotel" but thats a cafe, they rarely let rooms. You can get an excellent meal in these places for about 100 rupees instead of 600 to 800 for a tourist restaurant.
Rod.
