I have been reading up on the growth of the whale watching trips from Mirissa and that area, it seems to have started taking off now that so many Blue Whales are being seen in that area and around Dondra Head. Does anyone have any experience of these trips? I'm interested in the cost - I have seen suggestions they are expensive but I have done some whale watching in Europe, in the Bay of Biscay, and I would be keen to give this a try next month. We will be in Sri Lanka for NYE this year and wondered where the best place to spend it is? I've heard Hikkaduwa is good but is there likely to be something decent happeneing there?

We leave on the 22nd of december for 3 weeks to Sri Lanka. We would like to spend a few days at the beach and also to go inland. Has anyone travel experiences to share? What are must seens? Can anyone suggest a route? A beach that is less crowded during Christmas season and not so many tourists?

I´m planning to start a 3 days trecking tour from 9-11. January 2009. Hopefully that weekend will be good weather and full moon to enjoy the tour.
1. day: Start will be Haputale railways station. Walking alongside the railroads to Adisham Monestery, Idalgashinna and Ohiya railway station. There is a small shop having some rooms to stay over night.
2. day: Climb up to Horton Plains, Worlds End and Baker Falls.
3. day: Walking to Ohiya II near railway station but southside of the mountain…
There is news today that the Sri Lankan military has overrun the town of Alampil, which is only 10km south of Mullaitivu. In addition, fighting is nearing Kilinochchi itself. Once Kilinochchi is recaptured, how long will it be until tourism is possible in the city? I don't want to sound ghoulish - to the contrary, think of the example of East Timor. Once the fighting stops, local people will need income streams from businesses such as tourism in order to rebuild.
