Hi!

I saw yesterday night on TV news that you can go to Jaffna from Colombo (Ratmala army camp) with army plane or helicopter. Also open for tourists. I didn't check this information, but i think it's ok. You can find your ticket at airport (Bandaranaike Katunayake Airport, the usual tourists one) or at the Ratmala army camp. No idea about the price. Plane and helicopter don't look comfortable, normal for army. And i don't know about accomodation in Jaffna. The road to Jaffna is still closed…

Hi,

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) has a website that contains travel warnings. The entry for Sri Lanka seems to be excessive, almost paranoid. But I havent been to Sri Lanka before. The details are at http://www.smarttraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Sri_Lanka
My impression is that they havent updated the contents to reflect the end of the war in May of this year, even though the cessation of hostilities is referred to.

For those of you know are familiar with…

I will be taking visiting Sri Lanka for the first time from Oct 15 to 27. I do not have any firm plans yet. Plan on taking in some beach and natural areas as well as cultural/religious/historical sites.

I am interested in linking up with another traveller or two to share room and some transport costs.

Please give me a shout if you will be in Sri Lanka on these dates. Even if you do not want to link up for a few days we could have a drink or meal together.

Age, sex or culture do not matter…

Dear All, I have just started planning a holiday to Sri Lanka for only 10 days, unfortunately, around late Nov - early Dec. I'm pretty much sorted but have got a little bit stuck with a couple of days of the itinerary. I would appreciate any comments. We will be travelling with 2 kids aged 14 and 11. The plan is to hire a car/van and driver.
Day 1 - arrive early hours, straight to Negombo.
Day 2 - Negombo.
Day 3 - Dambulla & Sigiriya.
Day 4 - Polonnaruwa and travel to Kandy.
Day 5 - travel to 'Tea…

Hi,

I want to warn travellers about the kind of business with AlmaTours in Negombe near the international Airport of Colombo. In many guidebooks you can find "AlmaTours" as a good tour-operator also for hireing motorbikes or cars. They prefer to rent you a car with driver, cause it's not easy with the licence and the insurance and so on...
OK I hired a car with driver, all inklusive, so that I am not responsible for the accomodation and food for the driver. It's includet.
BUT: If you choose your…

Hi there,

My partner and I are thinking of going to Sri Lanka next May for our honeymoon (two weeks). Is this a good time or is it going into the Monsoon season?

What would be a recommended route - we want a combination of beaches, walking and sightseeing

Many thanks

Melanie

There is an article in the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror financial pages

http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections/frmNewsDetailView.aspx?ARTID=58911

describing how the government will be fixing prices in top Colombo hotels. According to this article prices will double in some cases.

The arguments used it justifying this are at odds with economic commonsense.

Are these guys running the economic show in Sri Lanka trained in any way? It doesn't seem like it.

Surely if room rates are so low at the…

I have just got the latest edition and it is very good. Fully updated with the current situation post-war.

I know that many people are very helpful on here with detailed advice but a book like this is essential for planning and for reference when actually there.

I bought mine online and it was delivered next day.
