Hello,
I am planning to visit Sri Lanka for 3 months and as such i will get a 30 day ETA Visa with the intention of renewing it twice. I was wondering if it is ok to buy my return flight for the end of the 3 months (2 months past original Visa)or if i need to have a flight that shows me leaving before the end of the original 30 days in order to get the first Visa?

I know that sounds confusing but i am guessing that lots of people find themselves in this situation and hopefully you could offer me some advice.

Thanks for your help, Brydie

No problem. Extensions are a normal part of their tourist business.

Dude,

I have been in Sri Lanka 5 hours now also staying for 3 months. I did apply for an ETA before I arrived, but to be honest I think it was a bit of a waste of time. On the aircraft they give out immigration forms that you hand in with your passport on arrival. My passport now has a little sticker with a 30 day visa on it. They did not ask for proof of a onward flight (which I had booked as I thought I had to).

I was in the exact same position as you, what happens if I book a flight three months from arrival and can only stay 30 days? As I just said I did book an onward flight out of Sri Lanka, but they didn't check or ask to see any proof of my onward flight out. Tomorrow I am going into Colombo to sort the 2 month extension. i have additional passport photos for visas (just in case), I will post again when I have sorted it.

I was there twice in 2010 for 60 days each (we remember the 60-day rule) and no one blinked about anything except onward tickets from India. Got my extensions and all was right with the world. Especially after the 60-day rule was scrapped.

Well that was an experience! Got to the Immigration Office around midday today, got out of there 4 hours later! I would suggest getting there early - unlike me.

The front entrance was locked so I had to go to the right and enter through a sort of indoor market. It's signposted well until you get in there. you need to go up to the third floor and enter the office to your left. It was packed with people and with no air conditioning I would recommend taking a snack and something to drink.

When you walk through the doors, on your left is where you get the extension application form, ask the man at the desk. Then turn round and you will see an area where you can fill the form in. Don't forget that you will need a passport photo, this needs to be stuck on the top right of the form. There are little pots of glue for you to stick your finger in and attach it.

Once you have completed the form go to any of the offices that are numbered 1-4, they are on the other side of the room where all the seats are. Go in, your form and passport are checked along with your outgoing flight, I just showed the confirmation on my phone. You then get a ticket...

Depending on how busy it is you can then take a seat and go through many mixed emotions, dreaming of life outside in the fresh air, wondering the meaning of life... When your number is called you go to counter 5, it's straight in front of you when you are seated. There you collect your form and passport, look at it and wonder why it has not been stamped.

You then need to go to the payments desk 7, it's where you filled your form in. give him your form and passport, which he will keep, and pay him the 7,400srp and get a receipt in return. You can then go and relax on the chairs again with anticipation much like playing Bingo, waiting for your number to come up. Eventually you will have the winning number and you can jump up and shout BINGO and go back to desk 5 and receive your treasured passport with a lovely stamp in it.

Have fun...

Ivan

Great info Ivan…..I think we'll wait until we get there for the visa…..we're gun shy after trying to obtain an India E visa (still not successful)….and so now we're looking at Sri Lanka as an alternate destination.
