Hi Everyone,

Really hoping can get some advice from those who have already done similar travels...

I will leave my friend in Colombo to travel on my own. I plan to get the train to Kandy and spend 2 nights there. One of those days will be a day trip to Siguria and Dambulla - will it be easy for me to get a guide/driver in Kandy for this ? Or should i pre book?

I am then going to get the train from Kandy to Ella, as i have heard it is the most scenic. I will then spend a night in Ella. I could get the train back which would be cheap, but wondering if better use of time is to get a driver, who might then also be able to stop in places like Nuwara Eliya and tea plantations on the way back which would be nice and so its not another 7-9 hours on a train. Again is it likely i will be able to find a driver to do this in Ella?

I have received a quote from a firm ( Sunway Holidays via evaneos) for this whole trip (so a driver to take me to all places, except for the train ride) including B&B for £460 plus cost of entry for things and the train - it seems a lot and i kind of want the flexibility and feel of travelling on my own for few days (i know its silly but have never done it before!) but i am worried i might find myself unable to get a driver for the Siguria trip and Ella to Colombo return...

Any thoughts and advice would be welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Kathryn, an excited but nervous Sri Lankan traveller!

It's easy to arrange a driver in any of these towns. We did this in 6 towns during our 2 weeks in Sri Lanka. We generally asked our guest house the previous day, on the theory that they'll recommend someone good.

It sounds like you'll be spending a lot of time on transport. It would be nice if you could spend 2 nights in each of Ella and Nuwara Eliya so you could explore those towns and surroundings. There are nice hikes around Ella and I really enjoyed renting a bike in Nuwara Eliya and riding through random tea plantations.
