Hi Guys.

Will be in Sri Lanka from 28th December to 08th January. Was looking at staying in Unawatuna until 02nd Jan then Tangalle from 2nd to 08th Jan. My questions being: Do these 2 places have nice beaches and fairly chilled out and could we get a hut/bungalow pretty much on the beach for around US$50 - US$60 per night?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I stayed in Tangalla in Feb 2006 at Palm Paradise Cabanas. We paid 40 euro/night for a double, which I think included breakfast and dinner. The food there was decent, nothing fancy. There was a great place on the beach, however, than made fantastic curry shrimp. Really really good and cheap.

The beach at palm paradise was not great for swimming when we were there because the waves were very rough. But it was pretty. The rooms were individual bungalows. They were nice. Again, nothing fancy, but cute and you could hear the ocean at night. The place is pretty much right on the beach.

Palm Paradise is perfectly nice and they have a small swimming pool, but Ganesh Garden is even nicer and for a fraction of the price...about $15 a night.

You can also get a good place to stay in Unawatuna for the same price or even less than $10 per night if you get back a block from the beach.

Unawatuna is perfect water and safe for swimming In Tangalle, you need to ask where the safe places to swim are or you will be swept away to Antarctica.

Unawatuna has beautiful water and good for swimming. The beach can be narrow at times, if the water is rough but December should be nice...And Unawatuna gets crowded too.. I have stayed at the Banana Garden, at the east end of the beach..It's less crowded there..The room rates range from $18 onwards....

I went to Tangalle last month to check out the guesthouses for my trip next week. Palm Paradise cabana rooms are very nice but I didn't think there was enough beach. On the other hand, the beach near Ganesh Gardens stretches for miles east.. We stayed at the Lagoon Paradise Beach which is next to Ganesh Gardens and behind the lagoon. It was a nice simple place, but if you want to be right on the beach, Ganesh Gardens should be good. They have hammocks in some of the rooms and also on the beach. If it wasn't for the Lagoon, I'd prolly stay there!

As celticmuseum said, Tangalle isn't very good for swimming. We went to wade around this little pool like place formed behind some rocks, down the Medaketiya Beach. The beach is very beautiful there although can get very hot since there's hardly any shade. Loved watching the sunrise and the fishermen!

If you want any more info on Unawatuna or Tangalle, you could always PM me :) We are going to Tangalle around the 22nd Dec.

cheers

Between Unawatuna and tangalle I recommend to stop to Mirissa(10 km before Matara). Not crowded and you can surf on the right part of the beach. At Mirissa Dinu Resort is nice guesthouse and cheap. Google the name of the resort and you can find it as well as some photos and nice place to visit all around.
