I was originally going to stay in Dambulla as a base for Sigirya and Polonnaruwa but the LP guide is pretty negative about Dambulla although I have seen forum users who like it. I need advice please. If I didn't stay in Dambulla, which of the other two is the better base?

Dambulla is good for economical budget travelers..City hotel prices are cheaper than Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa. However if you don't care about budget there is a nice hotels in Kandalama near to Dambulla.

We were thinking the same and after further investigation decided to take a place in Sigiriya not paid much more than Dambulla.

Try to climb Pudurangala mountain after Sigiriya. Its 2 km away from Sigiriya rock.
