Hi
Looking to head to Sri Lanka soon for a month or so for a surfing trip before heading to Oz and was wondering where the best surf points to go in the south are around this time of year and any tips on accomodation.
Obviously secret spots should be kept secret!!!!!!
cheers

Hey mate,
Hikkaduwa is the main spot but is getting busier by the day. Fortunately there are a lot of peaks so its easy to pick and choose. Unawatuna is an hour down the road past Galle and is another nice little wave, if not a little unpredictable. Then there is Midigama further along the coast and then any number of secret spots dotted along the coast that you may be able to find if you have the time and the patience.
I'm paying about 600 rupees to stay on (about 20m from) the beach in Narigama (Hikkaduwa) but you could probably get them down if you stay for a while. For the best peaks head to Wewala or Narigama, just pass Hikkaduwa. It all looks like the one town but believe me the tuk-tuk drivers will tell you different. Narigama is about 100 Rupees from the bus stand. There's loads of guest houses along the road so have a look and see.
Cheers,
Mick.

Hi
Probably the main area that tourists go to surf is Hikaduwa but the waves are mediocre and does get crowded. But if you want to meet other surfers then it's the place to head.
I'd say Unawatuna is only worth a day visit and theres plenty bars to refresh yourself when it's flat. It gets pretty crowded there too.
This morning I walked the dog along the beach and it was pumping here (I live in Ahangama), only a couple of local lads out. You need to be up with the larks here to catch the best of the waves then there's not much to do but chill with a cold beer and wait on the evening glass off.
I'd say the best "known" points are Midigama and Kabalana and suggest you base yourself around these areas, it'll be easy for you then to grab a tuk tuk and tie your board on the roof in search of thoses secret points which are a closely guarded secret (but I have been known to be bribed with some Arak!).
Depends what your budget is for accomodtion, the prices vary greatly. I'll send you a PM with a few suggestions.
Take care
