Hello, I would be grateful if someone would mind giving me an overview of costs in Sri Lanka. Not even so much an overview, but just a few words on how it compares to India in terms of costs. One may find a place to stay in India for as little as 2 USD a day, 5 USD very comfortable; food a quarter to a half a dollar US and up, internet half a dollar for an hour, bus or train rides anywhere from a dollar US to 20 depending on class and distance; and so on.

Are the prices in Sri Lanka on level with India, or are they much more expensive? I have the feeling that accommodation in Sri Lanka is more expensive, maybe 6 USD rock bottom? Anything in the very cheap range in Sri Lanka? Street food and dhabas are probably just as cheap as India?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

I've found SL is slightly more expensive than India, not double, maybe 20-30% more. Cheap accomm outside Colombo is easy to find. Bargaining is the norm, rock bottom prices are similar, but go up more steeply, $5 will get you a good room in most towns. Not so much street food, but small shops sell the equivalent. SL is a beautiful country, if you can afford India you can afford SL. Public transport is equally as cheap in the lower classes, and distances are much less. Go there, it's a nice place worth visiting.
