Does anyone know is it necessary to book ahead the accommodations during Xmas and New Year period in Sri Lanka? I will be staying at budget guesthouses / hostels if possible. Since I will be travelling for a month, I'd like my itinerary as flexible as possible so not sure if I should book everything... Thanks a lot!

I would book first night or two in Negombo, then you will have somewhere to head to after your flight. You could also book your last night there. After that, I agree, book as you go.
