I'll be travelling in Sri Lanka over Christmas and New Year, and planning to hit the beaches just before New Year. I'm undecided where best to go, Tangalla, Ahamgam or ...???

I'm after somewhere not too crowded, but with good vibes. A beach with good swimming. Body surfing would be a bonus.

Tangalle isn't very good for swimming although not crowded. Other beaches like Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna will be crowded. I think you should check out Mirissa or Ahangama..both has beautiful beaches, not very touristy, and good for body surfing and good enough for swimming. We'll be in Tangalle for Christmas and Mirissa for New Yrs :)

I agree with the previous post. Mirissa and Tangalle are rather quiet and friendly. In Mirissa I recommend Dinu Resort. Google it and you will find it with some photos. you can surf just in front of the guesthouse. If you go there, say hello from christel from Geneva.
