Hello,

I'm considering going to southerly Sri Lanka in later September or earlier october. I know it's rain season but I cannot find out what that means for Sri Lanka: endless rain for weeks and weeks or a heavy shower every aftenoon?

And which hotel is better for a beach holiday?
Heritance Ahungalla
Taj Exotica

I know there are many more, and probably many better places but this is only supposed to be a cheap and easy relaxing vacation, and I'm only 5 flight hours away and those two places are currently on offer.

Both show big waves on their website so I suppose swimming in the sea is not possible? What might the price level for dinners be there?
alternatively: Which place is better for eating out cheaply?
How much is having a driver for a day and how far can you actually go/ which sights are within reach?

Cheers,
Lili

Hi!

Rain season means shower some day... not every day, not all the day... and the sun come back quickly... and it's rain season only for south and west. for east and north (cultural triangle) is dry season.

I don't know these hotels. But i'm sure they are not cheap, there are plenty of cheaper hotels like guesthouses...

The ocean should be more and more quiet these next months, so i'm sure you can bath in the ocean, but maybe not swim. but i don't know these places and so the beach there...

You can go in any local restaurants and it would be cheaper, you will find plenty of them in the town, but i can't advise you one.

For the driver, it's depend where you go. From there you can visit the Fort at Galle in one day.

There are people on this forum who know very well this place, so they can tell you more about what to see and the price of the taxi and restaurants... i think there are already some posts about this area... check them to have more information...

Thanks a lot. Good news about the weather.

The first hotel is supposed to be 15 km from Ahungalla, and no village or other things nearby. That's a bit of a bummer as I'd need to eat out in that hotel.

The other one is near Bentota, but appearantly also alone on the beach. Also not so good for eating out.

The hotels are supposed to be 4-5 star. Food there will probably be not so cheap (just a guess as I have no idea). Maybe we should book flight and accomodation separately and chose a smaller place closer to a village. Need to think about that.

Taj Exotica is cheesy. If you spend that much money might as well spend a bit more and stay at Saman Villa. Saman Villa is absolutely fabulous.

I would head to Unawatuna. Haven't been to Unawatuna in September but I think you should still be able to swim. And there are plenty of cheap places eat and places to stay there. I recommend Rock side Cabanas 5 mins tuk tuk drive from Unawatuna.

Heritance and Taj are both good hotels - my dad built Heritance - but there is nothing nearby in terms of restaurants. The rooms at Heritance are new and the food at Heritance is really good - they have what they call Heritance cuisine where they pretty successfully blend Sri Lankan ingredients with European technique. If you book on a full board basis, it's all inclusive.

However, sea swimming at Heritance or Taj is not great. When I drove past the south western coast this week - where Taj and Heritance are both located - I noticed that the seas were a little rough also.

You might try a bay like Unawatuna or some place further south like Mirissa or Tangalle if you want to swim in the sea at this time. Unawatuna and Mirissa also have good restaurants on the beach that you can walk to.
