Hi All

I am travelling to Sri Lanka in a couple of weeks. I other countries I have hired a driver and car for point to point trips, picking up a new driver for the next leg of my trip. I want to blend this trip with train travel as well so am not keen to have a driver for the whole time. Also, will spend a couple of days in places exploring so would prefer to use local tuk tuk drivers where possible. And I only have a week!

So does anyone have any experience with this type of travelling in Sri Lanka and any recommendations on how I should approach it?

Thanks

Extremely easy to organise a car and driver wherever you are. We just got back from Sri Lanka and combined train travel (luckily with pre-booked seats as there were a lot of people standing!) with a car and driver. Simply tell your hotel that you want to organise a car to wherever the next day and they'll arrange it for you - loads of people do it. Our guide book actually said that it's cheaper to find your own driver - but on the one occasion we did this and found a taxi in the centre of Ella to take us to Tangalle our guesthouse owner said he would have arranged it for less money. So I don't know if asking at the hotel or finding your own driver in town works out cheaper.

I had an amazing trip in Sri Lanka. Wonderful. My only advice: do not rent a Tuk-tuk with Pick & Go Travel. They are the most expensive company by far, while other companies offer better service and cheaper prices. They say it's because they offer "quality service", but I can assure you this is completely false. My Tuk-tuk broke down and they didn't response or pay for the reparation. Plus they were rude and very unprofessional. Go with another company, you will save money and unprofessional service.

You can still hire a car and driver who will be flexible in terms of you taking train journeys etc during your tour. I hired Srilankanishatours who were great very flexible, reliable and good company.
