Hi
I am planning a trip to Sri Lanka soon. Are there restrictions on foreigners entering the country now with the ongoing Tamil conflict?
Is it relatively easy to travel around the country?
Any recommendations on places to go would be appreciated.

To my knowledge there are no restrictions whatsoever for foreigners entering SriLanka.
If you keep travelling to south( and avoid north and North east), you are absolutely safe. Must see places are Colombo city, Kandy,Nuwara liya,Bentota,Hikkaduwa, Galle etc.
Have a happy travel.

Hi,
The only restriction that I know of is that you can prove, if questioned , that you have sufficient cash available to support yourself and either hold or have the money for your ongoing ticket.
It's an easy place the travel around. Buses and trains are cheap and plentiful.
Must see places, depends on what you like but I'd say, a selection of sites in the cultural triangle. Maybe either Anuradhapura or Polonorua, Mihintale, Sigirya, Dambulla.
Kandy city and surrounds, ( elephant orphanage, botanical gardes,Temple of the Tooth, Etc.)
The hill country. Best two places to stop over up there , I reckon are Haputale and Ella.

Don't agree with a couple of the one's mentioned above although we all have different tastes. I wouldn't bother with Colombo city or Newara Eliya. Bentota is more a place for the star rated hotel brigade.
I found very little of interest in Colombo and Newara Eliya is quite often wet, cold and windy. Much more intrsting hill towns with better climates.
Rod.

No restrictions apart from the north where the fighting has been taking place, unless you are a foreign journalist of course. They won't let them in at present.

Travel is very easy but slow. The train network is good and you can get buses to anywhere - dead cheap too. Or you can hire a driver plus vehicle very easily and quite reasonably priced.

For places to go, you would be best to look through the FAQs or past messages and replies as this question is answered so often - are you keen on beaches, ancient sites, wildlife, surfing, trekking, beaches, hills? There is something for all these interests but you can't do everything. Why not invest in a copy of LP or Rough Guide? Then you can research at your leisure.

I am surprised this time not to see any reply from the LTTE propaganda to this question. It was sad how they had been using this Forum for their advantage, misleading all the travellers. They were so smart to fool all the westerners with their distorted publicity about the situation in Sri Lanka.
I believe the true nature of the LTTE (and their animal instincts)has been revealed to the whole world during the last few days.It was sad to see how they were shooting at the innocent civilians who were trying to escape from their custody, after using them so long as human shields for their protection. What kind of a Canibal Freedom fight it is?
I request from some of the Sri Lankan Tamils and LTTE sympathisers who live in our wesrtern countries to stop cheating the world in order to support your Rebels while enjoying all the comforts in the west. The innocent poor tamils in the North of Sri Lanka had gone through enough. Please stop some of your mean ways of misusing these Forums to support your political Agenda in the future if you are genuinely concerned
about the Tamils who live in the North.
